Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003) was an American astronaut, engineer, and the first woman of Indian descent to go to space.[2][3] She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. In 2003, Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.[4] Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor,[5] and several streets, universities and institutions have been named in her honor.[6][7][8] The late astronaut is recognized as a national hero in India.[9] She was in space for 336 hrs during research mission.

Kalpana Chawla was born in 1962 at karnal in the punjab. She had her schooling in her native town and later got her degree in aeronautical engineering form the punjab University. Kalpana then went over the U.S.A for higher studies in aeronautical engineering. She started her space research in 1988 at NASA(National Aeronautical and Space Association) located in florida in the United States of America. Kalpana Chawla had already become a great Space scientists. She joined the club of elite group of space science research in 1995. Kalpana Chawla was sent into outer space in January, 2003 to collect valuable bits of information about the space. But Kalpana Chawla's dream remained unfulfilled when the space-craft she was traveling in along with six other astronauts most unfortunately exploded on February 1, 2003. Kalpana Chawla's permature death caused a permanent void in world space research
