Date: October 20, 1991

Toll: Over 1000

The quake shook Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Tehri in Uttarakhand and caused extensive damage to property. The tremors of the quake were felt up to Delhi.

MARASHTRA

Magnitude: 6.4

Date: September 30, 1993

Toll: Over 20,000

The quake epicentre was at Killari village in Latur district. Osmanabad and Latur were the worst affected areas. The destruction was massive with over 52 villages completely flattened.

ASSAM

Magnitude: 8.6

Date: August 15, 1950

Toll: Over 1,500

The epicentre was located at Rima in Tibet. The quake caused widespread destruction in both Assam and Tibet. It was considered to be among the 10 largest earthquakes of 20th century.

Hundreds of people were killed and scores were injured when a powerful earthquake, measuring 7.9 on Richter scale, struck Nepal on Saturday. Tremors were felt in many parts of north and east India with 34 deaths reported at the last count. This is the strongest quake to have hit Nepal in 81 years.

BIHAR

Magnitude: 8.1

Date: January 15, 1934

Toll: Over 30,000

This quake is considered to be one of the worst quakes in Indian history. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in eastern Nepal. Extensive damage was caused to life and property. The intensity of the earthquake was so strong that its effect was felt in Kolkata-650 km from epicentre. Purnea, Munger, Muzaffarpur and Champaran were among the worst-affected areas.

GUJARAT

Magnitude: 7.7

Date: January 26, 2001

Toll: Over 20,000

The earthquake occurred at 8:40 am and lasted for two minutes. Several towns and villages were destroyed in the catastrophe. Being close to the epicentre, Bhuj was among the worst-affected areas including Anjaar, Vondh and Bhachau. Several buildings were damaged or destroyed in the quake. The famous Swaminarayan temple in the city of Bhuj was also partially damaged.
