The standard meridian of England is the Greenwich Meridian. Until the advent of the railway age, there was no need for a standard meridian as everywhere observed local “solar” time. This caused problems for the Great Western Railway because Bristol time was 10 minutes behind London time and the speed of the east-west London to Bristol trains made this difference significant and led to a movement for all of the United Kingdom to take its time from a single meridian.
