I don't know why “Y” for the vertical axis, but the “X” axis is simple, because “X” is a cross (across), and represents the axis which goes across, from left to right/right to left. It is customary but NOT compulsory to call the Cartesian axis X and Y as it is to name some unknowns in an algebraic equation.
