10. The people of Alsace were not very fond of learning and often postponed it.

They believed postponing learning wasn’t a big deal and that things could be learnt later.

M. Hamel blamed the elders for this as they had not been very supportive of education and wanted their sons to work on the farm for money.

12.The prison referred to here is the imposition of German language on the French people. Prussia had defeated France and captured Alsace and Lorraine.In his last lesson he appealed to his countrymen to hold on to French, their mother tongue as it was the key to their freedom.
