Social media has a huge influence with students and the younger generation. Over the last ten years social media usage has increased, due to new websites that are constantly emerging and pulling in more people. People that use social media check it daily to see what is being said, liked and commented on their posts. People are using social media, so they can feel more involved. They want to connect with others to see what everyone is saying and doing. Some people use social media to keep in contact with their family and friends. While others use social media to express their opinion or taunt others. Whichever the case, social media is becoming a distraction. People can check anywhere and at any time. Furthermore, teenagers are active users of social media. They are constantly updating their status and commenting on others. Teenagers are able to post hurtful comments and remain anonymous, so they are using social media as their voice. Therefore, some teens are using social media to keep in contact with others. Although, some teens are using social media as a way to express their opinion, but they should consider how their comments are affecting others.
Teenagers should be aware of what they are saying on social media. Teens make their comments seem harmless or playful, but in actuality, they can be hurtful to others. According to Sylvan Barnet and Hugo Adam Bedau authors and researchers of Current Issues and Enduring Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking and Argument, with Readings, Lauren Tarshis believe teenagers should “think before you post”.
