The word is actually autotrophs.

The auto- part comes from Greek and means by/for itself.

The troph part, also from Greek, means “food".

So an autotroph is something that provides food for itself (in this case from sunlight.)

The bit of the plant - chlorophyll - that does this is also the part that's green!
