if you connect the 5v source [battery] to the 10v appliance directly without any other electronics in between, you will end up charging the power supply i.e. the 5 volt source. Which will in turn discharge your battery to an abnormally low voltage. Remember, you have to create a voltage at the terminals of the battery which is greater than the rated voltage of that battery. Only then, there will be a +ve potential difference and the electrons will flow, and the battery may be charged.

This can be accomplished with a boost converter or buck-boost circuit (there are several different types of these circuits). However the 5V source must be able to provide enough current to overcome the losses in the converter circuit.

If the 5V source can’t provide that much current then the charge rate may be very slow, but it will still charge the battery
