Given:

Axial pull , P = 160000N

Maximum shear stress = 65MPa=65N/mm²

To Find:

Find the diameter of the circular bar

Solution:

Direct stress, σ = P/A

                         =(160000)/(πd²/4)

                         =(640000)/(πd²)

Maximum shear stress = σ /2=(640000)/(2πd²)

65=320000/(πd²)

d²=320000/(π×65)

   =1567

d=39.58mm

Hence the diameter of the circular bar should be 39.58mm.
