11. Give reason for the following:
(a) Non-metals in general do not displace hydrogen from dilute acids.
(b) Hydrogen gas is not evolved, when zinc metal reacts with dil. HNO3.
(c) School bells are made up of metals.
(d) Sodium hydroxide solution cannot be kept in aluminium containers.​

  1. A} non metals in general do not displace hydrogen from dilute acid. because non metal are those elements which have tendency to gain electron.
  2. B}  NO3 is a STRONG OXIDISING AGENT and it oxidises the evolved H2 gas to WATER (H2O).

Therefore hydrogen is not liberated.

C}  because metals are sonorous as it can produce big sound on striking it's surface

D}   Aluminum is more reactive than Sodium, so displacement reaction will occur and aluminum will displace sodium from sodium hydroxide and small pores are formed on container

2 Al + 2 NaOH + 6 H2O → 2 Na+ + 2[Al(OH)4]- + 3 H2 (gas)

hence sodium hydroxide solution cannot be kept in aluminum containers.
