Butene is a hydrocarbon classified under alkene and contains a double bond. There are four (4) ways in writing or expanding butene.

Butene has 4 carbons and 8 hydrogens.

CH2=CH-CH2-CH3 and CH3-CH2-CH=CH2 are the same since the double bond is on both ends and can be named as 1-butene.

CH3-CH=CH-CH3 is named as 2-butene. In naming alkenes, the bond must contain the lesser number as its priority.

2-butene can be further structured as cis- and trans- with the placement of the hydrocarbons attached on the carbon with a double bond. A hydrocarbon is prefixed with cis- if there are the same elements or hydrocarbons on both sides. A hydrocarbon is prefixed with trans- if there are different elements or hydrocarbons on each side.
