Answer:

What Are Algebraic Expressions?

Algebraic Expression Definition: An algebraic expression is a mathematical term that consists of variables and constants along with mathematical operators (subtraction, addition, multiplication, etc).

Example: 8x – 20, 5x – 6y + 30 etc.

Quick Note: Algebraic expressions shouldn’t be confused with algebraic equations. An algebraic equation has two sides (Left Hand Side or LHS and Right Hand Side or RHS) whereas an algebraic expression does not. In fact, an algebraic equation is made of two or more algebraic expressions separated by an equal sign (=). Let’s understand the difference with an example.

For example: (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 is an algebraic equation containing two terms, whereas (a + b)2 and (a2 + 2ab + b2) are algebraic expressions. Now you know the difference between algebraic expressions and algebraic equations.

Parts Of An Algebraic Expression

An algebraic expression contains a variable with or without a coefficient, a mathematical operator, and sometimes a constant. The different parts of an algebraic expression are:

Variable: A variable is a letter whose value is unknown. It can take any value depending upon the situation. Here:

6 is the coefficient of x.

x is a variable. Its value unknown and can be anything.

9 is a constant with a fixed value.

+ is an operator that is used for addition.

The expression as a whole is a binomial term since it contains only two terms i.e. 6x and 9.

Algebraic Expressions And Terms

Here we will tell you the difference between a variable, expression, and a term and how they are related. Often in mathematics, we come across symbols or letters such as x, y, z, etc. whose value is unknown and we have to find the exact or approximate value. Hence, a variable is defined as a letter or a symbol that is used to represent an unknown number

Any number or a variable combined by multiplication or division is known as a term. Example: 5, 6x, 5/3, etc.

An expression is a collection of a single or multiple terms separated by either subtraction or addition. Example: 5x-3, 23x, 2/3x + 4.

Coefficient: The coefficient is a numerical value used before a variable to modify its value. It may or may not be present in an algebraic expression.

Constant: A constant is any term whose value remains unchanged throughout the algebraic expression.

Operator: Mathematical operators are used in an algebraic expression to perform some mathematical calculation on two or more expressions.

Let’s understand with an example
