Here is the answer :-

⭐ If an opaque obstacle is kept between a source of light and a screen, a sufficiently distinct shadow is obtained in the screen. This shows that light which travels the obstacle is small (comparable to the wavelength of the light), there is a departure from straight line propagation and so the light bends round the corners of the obstacle and enters in a geometrical shadow. This bending of light is called diffraction.
