Characteristics (To be recognized):-

  • It appears homogenous, but it is a heterogeneous solution. The particles cannot be seen because they are too small.
  • The particles of colloid do not settle down when left undisturbed, Hence it is stable in nature.
  • If we will try separating the particles, we can't separate the particles using filter paper(Filtration), We will fail. We can separate by using Centrifugation.
  • It scatters the light passing through it. As a result, The path of light is visible in case of colloidal solution.

Other properties:-

  • The particle size range between 10‐⁷ cm to 10‐¹⁴ cm. Here, Dissolved substance is known as Dispersed phase and medium is known as Dispersed medium.
  • The colloids are translucent in nature.
  • The particles follow Brownian movement. It travels in a zig zag path or in heither-either way. It is due to hitting and colliding of the particles.

Properties Of Colloids :-

  • The particle size in collloids varies between 1 to 1000 nanometers.

  • The particles of colloids can be filtered from a filter paper.

  • Collloids are relatively stable in nature.

  • They are heterogeneous mixtures but appears to be homogeneous mixture.

  • Tyndall Effect Can be passed through collloids. (Tyndall Effect is the scattering of light.)
