13. Most mammals familiar to us produce live young, i.e., they are viviparous. In
them, the young develops in the uterus of mother for some time, receiving its
nourishment and oxygen through placenta and disposing its wastes by way of the
maternal circulation. However, a few of them (such as the platypus and the
echidna) lay eggs, i.e., they are oviparous. Still some other, such as kangaroos,
give birth to very poorly developed youngs.​
