13 =  \sqrt{144 +  {b}^{2} }  \\  \\ on \: squaring \: both \: sides \: we \: get \:  \\  \\  {13}^{2}  = 144 +  {b}^{2}  \\  \\  169 = 144  +   {b}^{2}  \\  \\  {b}^{2}  = 169 - 144 \\  \\  {b}^{2}  = 25 \\  \\ b \:  =  \sqrt{25}  \\  \\ b  = 5

13² =144 + b²

169 - 144 = b²

25 = b²

b = √25

b = ±5 .
