The major immediate cause of the first war of independence was Rifles.
When the British were in control, the Indian appointed soldiers were inferior and had to use the Enfield rifle in which the cartridge was rumored to be of cow and pig fat, which was outrageous for both Hindus and Muslims.
This led to mangal pandey protesting and getting executed for it resulting first war of independence.
