Subscripts can't be changed since the elements combine in that fixed ratio to form a molecule . If the subscripts are changed the molecular identity will change along with the chemical properties . For example to form water two atoms of hydrogen combine with one atom of oxygen but instead of that if we change the subscript of the oxygen to two we get hydrogen peroxide which is a totally different compound .
