• Democracy is said to be the best form of government in which people choose their representatives through their votes during elections. In India, elections are held in every five years and various political parties place their candidates for contesting elections, and the public are given choice to elect their representatives among these candidates.

• But how should we decide that which candidate is the best choice and why he should he elected. This is when electoral literacy comes into existence. Before voting for any particular candidate we must make sure that we know about his qualifications, his personal record and his way of tackling problems. Some of these questions are answered at the time if nominations when the candidates have to provide the Election Commission about their qualifications, eligibility, etc. But most of it is still left unclear. This is when media should intervene and it is their duty to give ant such information to the general public.

• People cannot investigate about the stated facts by the candidates, so it is the duty of the media to make the people aware of the qualities of a particular candidate. If the media fails to do so, we would be forced to vote for candidates without even having a prior information. This would be the great misuse of our voting rights, therefore electoral literacy is very important in democracy so that only the deserving candidates are elected to be our representatives.
