Answer:

charge on electron= -1

charge on proton= +1

Net charge = 3(-1)+ 2(1)

                   = -1 or -1.6×10^-19 C

Given: the number of electrons, n' = 3

           the number of protons, N = 2

To Find: the net charge, Q.

Solution:

To calculate Q, the formula used:

  • Q = n x e
  • n is the number of proton or electron
  • e is the charge on proton or electron

Applying the above formula:

Q = n' x e + N x e

here, e = + 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ C ( for proton)

         e = -  1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ C ( for electron)

∴ Q = 3 x ( -  1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹) + 2 x ( 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹)

      =  1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ C ( -3 + 2)

      =  1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ x (- 1)

      =  - 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹

Q    =  - 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹ C

Hence the net charge is - 1.6 x 10⁻¹⁹coulombs.
