Given info : there are serval condensers makers as (6μF & 220 V)

To find : how many such condensers are required to make a condenser marked as (12μF  & 440 V) ?

solution : this is really interesting question. let's solve it.

in series combination, voltage increasea due to decrease in effective capacitance of capacitors (or condensers which you want to say).

here voltage becomes 220V to 440 V, it means two condensers should be joined in series to make it. but the problem is .. when we join two condensers in series, effective capacitance becomes halved. i.e., 3μF

now to make it 12μF , we have to join four systems of two condensers in parallel combination [ because in parallel combination, voltage remains same. ]

now effective capacitance = 3μF + 3μF + 3μF + 3μF = 12μF

we got the exact value which was demanded.

see figure of arrangements of condensers,

therefore, 8 condensers are required to make a condenser marked as (12μF & 440 V).
