Given

  • Ram is twice as old as Shyam.
  • 10 years Ago Ram was 4 times as old as Shyam.

To find

  • Present ages of Shyam and Ram

Solution

Let the age of Shyam be x and the age of Ram be 2x.

Their ages :-

  • Ram's age = 2x - 10 years
  • Shyam's age = x - 10 years

According to the question,

⟶ 2x - 10 = 4(x - 10)

⟶ 2x - 10 = 4x - 40

⟶ 2x - 4x = - 40 + 10

⟶ - 2x = - 30

⟶ 2x = 30

⟶ x = 30/2

⟶ x = 15

The value of x = 15.

∴ Their present ages :-

  • Ram's age = 2x = 2 × 15 = 30 years
  • Shyam's age = x = 15 years

Ram is twice as old as Shyam. If 10 years ago, Ram was 4 times as old as Shyam, then the present ages of Ram and Shyam are 30 years and 15 years.
