The current that runs a clock is DC (direct current) and the one which we get in our homes is AC (alternating current). DC cannot be used in our homes because its charge gets weaker and weaker with increase in distance of transmission lines. But AC maintains its charge over a long distance, hence it is preferable to use for our domestic use.
