When a carpet is beaten with a stick, it comes into motion. But the dust particles continue to be at rest due to inertia and get detached from the carpet.

As on beating the carpet with the stick, the carpet moves ahead & by inertia of rest dust particles remain in rest but when they came in air they are no more in contact with the carpet & due to gravity of earth they fall down.
