18. The crow shakes down some particles of snow from a branch of a hemlock tree, which changes the poet's mood. The falling of the snow makes him joyful and saves a part of the day he was left with.

19. Fire stands for desire, avarice and greed and Ice stands for indifference, rigidity and hatred. These are two extreme feelings of human heart which can destroy the Earth.

20. The poet dis not offer him money to buy another ball because he wants the boy to get the feeling of responsibility. He also wants him to cope with his loses himself. Another ball could not have replaced the love for the previous one.
