The answer is option (a) 16025.64 L.

GIVEN:

Volume of NaCl solution : 40 litres.

Mass% of NaCl = 15%

Hardness of hard water = 320 ppm.

TO FIND:

Volume of hard water that can be softened.

SOLUTION:

We can simply solve the given problem as under,

Let, V1 = volume of hard water

V2 = Volume of NaCl solution = 40 litres.

Strength of Nacl in the solution = 150 × 10^3 gL^-1

molar mass of Zeolite(CaCo3) = 58.5 g

equivalent mass of CaCo3 = 50g

To calculate Hardeness of water following formula is applied =

h \:  =  \frac{eq \: of \: caco3 \times strength \: of \: nacl \:  \times \: volume \: of \: nacl \: solution }{mass \: of \: caco3 \times volume \: of \: hard \: water}

putting the values we have,

320 \: =  \frac{50 \times 150 \times 40 \times  {10}^{3} }{58.5 \times v1}

v1 = 16025.64

hence, 16025.64 litre of hard water

hence, 16025.64 litre of hard watersample can be softened using this softener.
