यह आंदोलन भारत में ज्योति राव गंगाराम फुले के नेतृत्व में आरंभ किया गया। उस वक्त भारत में दलितों की अवस्था बहुत ही दयनीय थी दलितों को कोई भी अच्छे नजर से नहीं देखता था। सब दलितों का शोषण करते थे एक तरफ से कहा जा सकता है कि यदि उस वक्त समाज में कोई शोषण शोषण वर्ग था तो वह दलितों का ही वर्ग था जिसके साथ सबसे अधिक शोषण किया गया था।
इन्हीं सब कारणों के कारण भारत में 1990 को दलित आंदोलन का आरंभ किया गया इसका मुख्य उद्देश्य था दलितों को पिछड़े समाज से सामने लाना उनको शिक्षा का अधिकार दिलवाना एवं उनको शोषण से मुक्त करवाना।
