Given info : 1 g H₂ gas and x g O₂ gas exert a total pressure of 5 atm. at given temperature, partial pressure of O₂ gas is 4 atm.

To find : the amount of O₂ in the mixture is...

solution : we know, partial pressure = mole fraction × total pressure

here total Pressure = 5 atm

and partial pressure of oxygen gas = 4 atm

so, 4 atm = mole fraction of O₂ × 5 atm

⇒ mole fraction of O₂ = 4/5 = 0.8

⇒no of moles of O₂/(no of moles of O₂ + no of moles of H₂) = 0.8

here, no of moles of H2 gas = given mass/molar mass = 1g/2g/mol = 0.5 mol

similarly, no of moles of O2 gas = x/32 mol

now, (x/32)/(x/32 + 0.5) = 0.8

⇒(x/32) = 0.8x/32 + 0.4

⇒0.2x/32 = 0.4

⇒x = 64g

Therefore the mass of O2 gas in the mixture is 64 g.
