so out of numerous ways to approach it one way is that we have to find the factors of 16 and check whether it sums upto 6 or not

so we see that 8×-2=16 and 8+(-2)=6

hence, by splitting the middle term we get

p^2+6p-16=p^2+8p -2p-16

=p(p+8)-2(p+8)

on taking (p+8) common we get

(p+8)(p-2)

so we have x=p

a=8

b=-2

*note that b is not 2 but -2
