Speed, being a scalar quantity, is the rate at which an object covers distance. The average speed is the distance (a scalar quantity) per time ratio. Speed is ignorant of direction. On the other hand, velocity is a vector quantity; it is direction-aware.

HERE IS YOUR ANSWER:

  • Yes of course speed is a scalar quantity because it doesn't focus on direction, it focuses primarily and works upon magnitude.

  • Therefore, speed is scalar quantity and velocity which depends on both magnitude and direction is vector quantity.
