Given 2x+3y=8 ......... (1)

x+2y=5 ........... (2)

From (1), we have x= 8−3y/2. ............ (3)

From (2), we have x=5−2y. .......... (4)

Now, comparing the value of x, we get

8−3y/2=5−2y

or 8−3y=10−4y

or 4y−3y=10−8

or y=2

Using y=2 in (4), x=5−2×2=1.
