2.4g of magnesium gave on combustion 4g of mass of magnesium oxide. A sample of magnesium oxide obtained by heating magnesium carbonate was found to contain 60%magnesium and 40% oxygen. How do these results illustrate the law of constant proportion

Total mass= 4g

Mass of Mg= 2.4g

Mass of O= 4-2.4g

=1.6g

% of Mg= 2.4/4 ×100

= 2.4×25

= 60%

% of O= 1.6/4 ×100

=1.6×25

=40%

Hence proved.
