2. A positive number is 3 times another number. If 3 is added to the smaller number the difference
between new number and greater becomes 31. What are the numbers?

X=51, Y=17

let the numbers be X and Y

And Y be the smaller number

given X=3Y -(1)

X-(3+Y) = 31 -(2)

substitute X value in (2)

3Y-3-Y=31

2Y=31+3

2Y=34

Y=17

X = 3Y = 3(17) = 51
