A train is moving with a speed of 40 km/h. As soon as another train going in the opposite direction
passes by the window, the passenger of the first train starts his stopwatch and notes that other train
passes the window in 3 s. Find the speed of the train going in the opposite direction if its length is 75 m.

Let the speed of the train going in the opposite direction be x m/s.

speed of train going in the forward direction is 40 km/h or 100/9 m/s.

relative speed of train going in opposite direction withrespect to the passenger = 100/9 + x.

time taken = 3s.

distance = 75 m.

therefore

25=100/9 +x.

x=125/9 m/s or 50 km/h.

hence the speed of the train going in the opposite direction is 50 km/h.

shashank172004: how does we get 25=100/9+x??
kamnajain26: speed = d/t na so 75/3= 25 and the speed is 100/9 + x so we equate
