Question:-

ABCD is a rectangle. Find the value of x and y.

Answer:-

According to the given condition,

ABCD is a rectangle whose length and breadth are 16 cm and 12 cm respectively.

And as we can see in the figure,

  • x + y = 16 ------- Eq.1

  • x - y = 12 ------- Eq.2

We need to find the value of x and y.

On subtracting Eq2 from Eq1 we get,

  • (x + y = 16) - ( x - y = 12)

  • ( x + y - x + y) = (16 - 12)

  • 2y = 4

  • y = 2

On substituting value of y in equation 1, we get

  • x + y = 16

  • x + 2 = 16

  • x = 16 - 2

  • x = 14

So, the required values are,

x = 14 and y = 2.
