All soil is made up of different percentages of sand, silt and clay, aka particle sizes. Sand is the largest particle size, silt is medium and clay is very tiny. When you mix and match different amounts of each of these, you get different textures of soil. There are 12 different textures on the textural triangle (see other response, or use Googl e), with the percentages of sand silt and clay listed for each.
