Nitrogen fixation : It is the process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into the form usable by plants. Plants use nitrogen as Nitrate (NO3-).

Nitrogen Fixation due to lightning : Nitrogen constitutes 71% by volume in the atmosphere and is present in the form of N2 molecules. The bond between two nitrogen atoms is a triple bond which is very strong. In order to break the triple bond, very high energy is required.

During lightning, high temperature is produced and it splits the strong triple bond present between the two nitrogen atoms. Oxygen present in the atmosphere combines with nitrogen to form  nitric oxide (NO) , Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) takes place. It can further be reduced to nitrates by bacterias present in soil and plants can use it.
