Many factors have contributed to the decrease in popularity of snake charmers.

To begin with, snake charming is an old tradition that has lost its relevance. Now, very few people consider it as a means of entertainment. Entertainment and leisure have shifted indoors. These days the television, internet and video games are the main sources of entertainment. Street performances and even theatre have witnessed a sharp decline in popularity. Hence, for the urban crowds, snake charming is no longer a fun activity to watch.

Additionally, with greater awareness regarding cruelty to animals, people have stopped supporting activities that involve performances by animals. Snake charming is also seen as cruelty to snakes, which are kept in captivity.  The Indian laws too prohibit the possession of snakes. Therefore, fewer people take up snake charming as a profession. Also, the government has started recruiting snake charmers to assist in saving snakes by removing them from urban areas and releasing them in the wild. With other options available, snake charmers often give up snake charming. This is why snake charmers are not as frequently sighted as they were earlier.
