Given:

2 g of ice at 0°C is dropped in a beaker containing 10 g of water at 20°C.

To find:

Final temperature of mixture?

Calculation:

  • Latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 Cal/g
  • Specific heat capacity of water is 1 Cal/gK

Applying Principle of CALORIMETRY:

 \therefore \: energy \: taken \: up \: by \: ice = energy \: released \: by \: water

 \implies \: (m1)L +( m1)c(\Delta \theta_{1}) = (m2)c(\Delta  \theta_{2})

 \implies \: (2 \times 80) + \{2 \times 1 \times ( \theta - 0)  \}=  \{10 \times 1(20 - \theta) \}

 \implies \: 160 +2 \theta =  200 - 10 \theta

 \implies \: 12 \theta =  40

 \implies \:\theta =   \dfrac{40}{12}

 \implies \:\theta =  { \dfrac{10}{3}}^{ \circ}  \: C

So, final temperature is (10/3)° C.
