the smell of hot sizzling food reaches us several metres away because when food is heated, the particles of food diffuse. When they diffuse, the particles start moving hitting each other. when they hit each other, we get their smell

But in the other side, cold food undergo no diffusion and we have to go near it to get it's smell

When food is hot, diffusion is more. But in cold food diffusion is slow. Hence to get the smell from cold food we have to go close.
