The probability of the event not occuring is 1-p.

1) As per the event, It is either likely to happen or not happen.

2) Since, we have only two options, the sum of their probabilities would be 1

3) P is the probability that event will happen and Q is the probability that event won't happen.

4) So, P + Q = 1.

5) Hence Q = 1-P.
