2. In a hydraulic press a force of 20 N is applied to a piston of area 0.20 m2. The area
of the other piston is 2.0 m2. What is
(a) the pressure transmitted through the liquid,
(b) the force on the other piston?

Answer:

1 a ) pressure through the liquid => Force / area => 20 N / 0,20m² = 100 N/m²

b) Force on other piston = (F1 / A1) * A2 = F2 => F2 = (20N/0,20m²) * 2,0m² = 200 newton

2) Because a gas decreases in volume when compressed and a liquid doesn't.

3) A liquid takes the shape of the container.

4) Total pressure = hydrostatic pressure + atmospheric pressure

( Hydrostatic pressure = height * g * density )

Total pressure = (1150 kg/m³ * 100 m * 9,81 ) + 101300 Pa

= 1229450 Pa
