When the earth's temperature rises and the earth heats up global warming takes place. This occurs when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere leading to an increase in the temperature. This is harmful for human beings, animals and plants. Many of them who cannot take the change, die.

There are many reasons for global warming. The green house effect is considered to be the main cause. This effect is mainly brought about by carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluoro carbon, nitrous oxides and others. These gases form a cover around the Earth through which the hot rays of the Sun can enter but cannot exit from the earth. Hence the sun's heat remains in the lower circle of the earth due to which the temperature rises.

It is feared that by 2050 there may be a rise in temperature of about 4° to 5°C. In the last five centuries the average temperature of the earth has risen by about 1°C. Half of this warming has taken place in the twentieth century alone. Thus there is an alarming increase in global warming.

Many parts of the world are affected by global warming. It makes the sea rise due to which  the water covers many low land islands. This creates a problem for many of the animals, plants and people on islands.

Global warming is harming many people, animals and plants. It is responsible for killing algae and destroying many huge forests. Global warming is linked to acid rain. This gradually destroys everything it touches. Many fires that wipe out whole forests are caused due to global warming. This takes place because global warming makes the earth very hot. The leaves of some plants and trees in the forest become so dry that they catch fire.

Agricultural crops, forests and life growth is affected adversely by the rise in average temperature of the earth. The balanced equations of marine life are also changed due to it. The melting of glaciers may lead to the rise of the sea level and pose a threat to the habitat of coastal areas.

These dangerous effects of ‘global warming’ are a matter of concern for everyone. That is why measures are being taken to tackle it at the international level. A large number of conferences are being held, agreements are being made, and research is being done in the field.
