Charcoal burns without giving off water vapour because it contains only carbon while burning whereas other fuels like kerosene give off water vapour because they contain hydrogen which combines with the atmospheric oxygen to form water vapour.

When a hydrocarbon is burnt in sufficient amount of oxygen , the products formed will be carbon dioxide, water vapour and heat energy. For example : When methane (CH4) is burnt in sufficient amount of oxygen, it will give CO2 and H2O. Hydrocarbon will burn with a clean flame.

CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O + energy

C2H6 + 7/2O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O + energy

But when hydrocarbon is burnt in insufficient amount of oxygen , then the products formed are solid carbon , water and energy. Burning of hydrocarbon in insufficient oxygen will give sooty flame.

CH4 + O2 → C + 2H2O
