The solubility of electrovalent compounds

  • The compounds with the ionic bond are called electrovalent compounds.
  • Electrovalent compounds are soluble in polar solvents such as water and insoluble in non-polar solvents such as kerosene, benzene etc.
  • It is because, when electrovalent compounds are dissolved in polar solvents, the force holding the molecules together is decreased and thus makes them soluble in the solvents.
  • On the other hand, electrovalent compounds are insoluble in non-polar solvents such as kerosene, benzene as these solvents increase the electrostatic force of attraction.
