Meridians are imaginary lines that run north-south direction on the earth's surface and connect the geographical poles that are the north pole and south pole. Standard time is determined by the meridians. Meridians are also called longitudes. Each meridian is most distant from each other at the Equator but converges at the poles.
The two important meridians are Prime Meridian and International Dateline.
- The Prime Meridian is a meridian on the earth's surface at which the longitude is 0°. It is the starting point for measuring the distance of both east and west around the Earth. The meridian that runs through Greenwich, England is the official prime meridian. The official prime meridian is agreed upon Internationally.
- The International Dateline is a meridian on the earth's surface at which the longitude is 180° east. It is halfway around the Greenwich Prime Meridian 0°. The Prime meridian and International dateline run from the north to the south pole dividing the earth into Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere. It defines the boundary between one day and the next. When we cross the International dateline travelling west we add a day and when we cross the dateline travelling east we subtract a day.
