2 oxides of certain metal separately heated in a current of hydrogen until constant weights were obtained. The water produced in each oxide was carefully collected and weighed. It was found that one gram of each oxide give 0.1254 gram and 0.22 63 gram of water respectively. show that the data supports the law of multiple proportions

Solution

The law of multiple proportions says that If two elements form more than one compound between them, then the ratios of the masses of the second element which combine with a fixed mass of the first element will be ratios of small whole numbers.

Therefore, the ratio of the weights of oxygen which react with a fixed mass of the metal is 0.1250.2263 which is approx 1:2.
