2. Read the following paragraph and comment on it.
The farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have shifted to cultivation of HYVs of rice and wheat
which require plenty of water. The main source of irrigation in these states is tube wells that draw
groundwater. Groundwater can be maintained as long as the use of groundwater is less than the
groundwater recharge.
Secondly, the use of fertilizers and pesticides which is essential for HYV cultivation, nevertheless act
immediately on plants but they kill the bacteria in the soil which is the essence for soil fertility.
The groundwater and soil fertility which is built up over long period of time, once destroyed, it is near
impossible to restore them.​
