[1x4-4]
The coloured nature of solutions or coordination compounds, can also be explained on the basis of
crystal field theory, because in coordination compounds the energy difference between two sets of d-
orbitals is usually small (as explained by crystal field splitting) thus, excitation of an electron from lower
energy to higher energy is very easy and can be achieved even by absorption of low energy radiations
of visible region. As a result of the absorption of such selected wavelengths of visible light, the
complexes appeared coloured.
In the following questions, a statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason is given. Choose
the correct answer out of the following choices:
(a) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason id correct explanation for assertion.
(b) Assertion and reason both are correct statements but reason is not correct explanation for assertion.
(c) Assertion is correct statement but reason is wrong statement.
(d) Assertion is wrong statement but reason is correct statement.
(1) Assertion (A): [Ti(H20)6]3+ is coloured while [Sc(H2O)6]3+ is colourless.
Reason (R): d-d transition is not possible in [Sc(H20).]3+.
(ii) Assertion (A): [Fe(CN)6]3-ion shows magnetic moment corresponding to two unpaired electrons.
Reason (R): It has d’sp type hybridisation.
(iii) Assertion (A): [Cr(H2O).]Cl2 and [Fe(H2O).]Cl2 are reducing in nature.
Reason (R): Unpaired electrons are present in d-orbitals.
(iv) Assertion (A): [FeFo]-is a low spin complex,
Reason (R): Low spin complexes have lesser number of unpaired electrons.
