Question

State the property used in each:-

(i) 56 × (19 + 91) = (56 × 19) + (56 × 91)

(i) 352 × 0 = 0

(iii) 491 × 1 = 491

(iv) 52 × 25 = 25 x 52

(v) 386 × (9 - 6) = (386 × 9) - (386 × 6)

(vi) 45 × (36 + 22)= (45 × 36) + (45 × 22)

To find

The property used.

Properties of multiplication

Closure property-

If a and b are whole numbers, then (a × b) is also an whole number.

For example, 9 × 8 = 72, where 9, 8 and 72 are whole numbers.

Commutative law-

If a and b are two whole numbers, then

(a × b) = (b × a).

For example, 7 × 5 = 35 and 5 × 7 = 35.

So, (7 × 5) = (5 × 7).

Multiplicative property of zero-

For every whole number 0, we have:

(a × 0) = (0 × a) = 0

For example, 9 × 0 = 0 × 9 = 0.

Multiplicative property of one-

For every whole number 0, we have:

(a × 1) = (1 × a) = a

For example, 8 × 1 = 1 × 8 = 8.

Associative law-

If a, b, c are any whole numbers, then

(a × b) × c = a × (b × c)

For example, (9 × 7) × 10 = 63 × 10 = 630

9 × (7 × 10) = 9 × 70 = 630

So, (9 × 7) × 10 = 9 × (7 × 10).

Distributive property of multiplication over addition-

For any whole numbers a, b, c, we have:

a × (b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c)

For example, 16 × (9 + 8) = 16 × 17 = 272

(16 × 9) + (16 × 8) = (144 + 128) = 272

So, 16 × (9 + 8) = (16 × 9) + (16 × 8).

Distributive property of multiplication over subtraction-

For any whole numbers a, b, c, we have:

a × (b - c) = (a × b) - (a × c)

For example, 11 × (6 - 4) = 11 × 2 = 22

(11 × 6) - (11 × 4) = (66 - 44) = 22

So, 11 × (6 - 4) = (11 × 6) - (11 × 4).

Hope this helps you.
